Give or take there are roughly over 20 million places of work in the UK and for every 1 employee, there are an estimated 20 metres of unsafe or trailing cabling totalling 400 million metres across the UK which account for over 500 falls per day. – Many of those 500 injuries are life altering and in some cases life-threatening.
According to a statistic provided by the HSE in 2015, slips and trips are the single most common cause of injuries in the workplace and account for over a third of all major workplace injuries. On closer inspection, another study produced by the HSE which you can find here details over 21,000 major injuries were directly attributed to trips and slips in construction.
But what happens when we look at the statistic and we explore the consequences of trailing cables in the workplace?
It’s estimated that over a quarter of injuries caused by trips and falls (in the USA) result in severe injuries including hip and skull fractures – of which 46% of head injuries have resulted in some form of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
HSE report than 40% of all injuries in the workplace is caused by falls, many of which are a result of trailing cables.
The severity and seriousness of trailing cables (although reducing year on year) is still a widely accepted epidemic in the workplace. The types of injuries and potential situations that arise due to poor cable management are so large that the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) even identified that over 20,000 employees lost their lives as a direct result of trips and falls in 2014.
The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 all exist because of a very real threat to our health and safety.
Whether it’s a bruise, break or anything else we need to be proactive in our approach to dealing with trailing cables, we need a solution before it becomes a problem.
